Intensive Summer Immersion in Studio Art Practice
for Teens, 13-15 and 16-18, and Youth, 9-12
Program Coordinator: Betina Fink
Faculty: master teaching artists of The Drawing Studio

Every citizen of the 21st century—young and old—confronts the complexity of our increasingly visual world every day. The younger one begins to learn where images come from, how they are made, and how they communicate, the more likely one will have the skills to thrive in the modern world.

The Art of Summer offers the exciting experience of concentrated immersion in studio art practice as an effective pathway to developing visual intelligence. Through developing fundamental drawing skills, students hone their skills of observation, the effects of which are felt far beyond art-making. Intensive experiences are available in oil and acrylic painting; sculpture in clay, paper, wire, steel; printmaking; figure painting and drawing; narrative and comic illustration; sketchbook development; exhibition and curatorial studies; and portfolio development and presentation.

Whether or not a student is interested in an art career, disciplined daily practice and inquiry fosters self-confidence, improves problem-solving skills, and strengthens reasoning. Unlike traditional school programs, AofS students have time to pursue ever deepening visual inquiries. Students are instructed by and receive individual attention from master teaching artists in an environment where all are treated as fellow artists.

Immersion experiences provide 30-100 hours of studio time, depending on the student’s age and options chosen. Teens who complete one of the fundamentals options or are returning from a prior year are eligible for week-long intensives in various media. The program includes field trips to downtown museums, galleries, and artist studios.

The program culminates in an all-student exhibition at The Drawing Studio in August. Selected work will also travel to other venues throughout Tucson in fall 2009.

Need-based scholarships are available. For more information about the options, tuition rates, scholarship applications, and registration materials: 520-620-0947, youth@thedrawingstudio.org, or www.thedrawingstudio.org.
