DESIGN CLASSES at TDS
Spring 2009

Registration at The Drawing Studio is on a first-come, first served basis. If a class is full, we will maintain a waiting list, and if space opens up, notify people in the order they are listed. We do not take reservations for classes to be offered in the following session. A registration is not complete until a financial transaction has taken place.

Waiting until the last minute to register is not advisable. If a class does not have at least 5 people registered in the 3 or 4 days preceding the first session, we usually cancel the class.

Please check our website for the beginning of on-line registration — Classes & Workshop page contains a link.

Our Supply Lists are PDF (Portable Document Format) files. You need Adobe® Reader® to view these files. Most newer systems come with Reader installed, so all you have to do is double click on the Supply List link for the class you want and Reader® will open automatically. If your system doesn't have Reader® installed, it's a free download from Adobe®. Get it by clicking on the logo at right. After you install it, come back to this page and get/print the supply list(s) you want.

All classes meet at 33 South 6th Avenue unless otherwise noted.

Fearless in Fiber: Studio Fiber Art
Taught by Karin Malzan Phifer
Prerequisite: good sewing skills and portable sewing machine
Three Thursdays, 9 AM – 3 PM
March 19 – April 2

Only one rule in this studio course can NEVER be broken: no agonizing! Working quickly and intuitively at first, stepping back to work more slowly on a colorful and balanced composition later in the process, students learn to become fearless while working with and sewing fabric to create abstract wall art.  Special attention will be paid to observation during the creative process and catching the happy accident. As an optional final step, students will use oil pastels to enhance their compositions. Topics discussed will include: how to work with a “fixed palette”, achieve depth through layering visual planes and utilize textures/patterns effectively. To accommodate new students, there will be a demonstration of the sewing technique employed on the first day.

Fee: $165 (Associates $150), includes some material
