The 2013 Annual Gala “The Paper Ball” celebrates that most basic yet versatile of art materials—paper—and the many artists who use it as a foundation or as a medium in itself. The Drawing Studio has grown from a small “club” of 15 art students and artist-friends of founder Andrew Rush to a visual arts hub for studio art education serving close to 7500 people of all ages and walks of life each year.
Our Youth Program provides studio art instruction for 500, largely low-income and underserved, youth and teens through the Art of Summer immersion program and school year outreach. OATS (Outreach Art Tutoring for Seniors) reaches 400+ seniors in senior and neighborhood centers, assisted living facilities, and libraries. Our Adult Program offers an innovative fundamentals sequence in drawing; open studio practice sessions; and classes and workshops in a wide variety of media, subject areas, formats, and locations.
We mount 8-10 exhibits each year in our gallery, and organize many more in nontraditional venues throughout the community. The Drawing Studio and its founder have received numerous awards over the years, including the Governor’s Art Award for Community, Tucson Pima Arts Council Lifetime Achievement, Buffalo Exchange Art Award, and numerous grants from the Tucson Pima Art Council, the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
