"Landscape (Un)Tamed:
Order and Chaos in the Natural World "
Drawings and Paintings by
Betina Fink and Meredith Milstead
October 1 – November 5

See the works from their exhibit here.

This exhibition features paintings and drawings by two TDS faculty: Betina Fink and Meredith Milstead. Each artist uses the landscape theme as an inspirational and direct source of subject matter, and then takes the ideas back into the studio and interprets the work further.

Both artists take liberties with the initial subject matter and let the working process inherent in the act of painting and drawing, inspire and direct the work. Please notice the sketches placed near some of the completed works and find visual references and relationships between the two.

Fink and Milstead have been working artists and instructors at TDS for many years. This year, Fink is teaching Drawing With Color, a portion of the Painting Samplers, Introduction to Oil Painting, and Oil Painting Studio. She is also the Youth Programs Director (including Art of Summer), and coordinates youth outreach programs at TDS (including the Gang Outreach program, and The Boys and Girls Club art program).

Milstead, a new member to the TDS Board of Directors, is instructing courses in Drawing Fundamentals, Drawing With Color, Composition in Drawing, and manages the Painting Sampler program. She is a core faculty during the Art of Summer program, and taught last year at the BASIS Tucson School, representing TDS art program.

"Tool, Metal, Wood, Ink, Paper"
May 14 – June 11, 2011

An Exhibit of the many forms of printmaking taught at The Drawing Studio featuring works by participants in classes and open print labs

The Master Printmakers’ exhibit at The Drawing Studio “wowed” art lovers, especially those who appreciate the conversation between the tool and the block, the ink and the paper. On the heels of one fantastic show about printmaking comes another, this time comprising work by contemporary artists studying and working at The Drawing Studio.

Tool, Metal, Ink, Wood, Paper features work using relief, intaglio, and monotype processes and tools, primarily made in the TDS printroom in the company of other printmakers. Founded by and nurtured by master printmaker Andrew Rush, The Drawing Studio is a place to learn, develop and to grow, as an artist and as a vibrant member of the community. Discover the art of printmaking at The Drawing Studio at the Tool, Metal, Ink, Wood, Paper exhibit.

"Roz Eppstein: A Life in Art"
April 9 – May 7, 2011

An eclectic solo retrospective exhibit highlighting the artist’s work in painting, drawing, and collage.

“When I started making art at twelve, what I didn’t realize is that the excitement would never leave,” says long-time Tucson artist Roz Eppstein. The retrospective exhibit of Eppstein’s early drawings, her watercolor paintings, her later abstract works, and her most recent collages offers proof of more than sixty years of excitement making art. Walking through the exhibit is like exploring art with Eppstein, who continues to take a playful, enthusiastic, and experimental approach to her art. The progression of Eppstein’s growth is also testament to the mission of The Drawing Studio, which views the practice of art as a life-long exploration that includes continuous learning from each other. Even after a full life of creating art, Eppstein took classes and claims to have come “full circle,” from questioning abstract art to producing it. “How can I stop producing art?” Eppstein asks. “I’m in love with the doing.”

"Art Parts: 5 TDS Emerging Artists Tackle the Business of Making Art"
March 5 – April 2, 2011
Artists: Maria Arvayo (encaustic), Katherine Gregg (encaustic 3-D), Patti Lynch (pastels), Claire O’Connor (fabric),
Catharine Kim Woodin (watercolor).

Traditionally, being an artist has been accompanied by a mystique about how art gets made (fate, a gift of the muses, luck, a complete mystery…?) that fascinates many of us. So it is with great expectancy we might ask, “How does art actually “‘happen’?” Where better to find answers than at The Drawing Studio, which is dedicated to cultivating the skills of visual intelligence in people of all ages through a developed curriculum, opportunities for fellowship and professional support, and interpretive exhibitions.

Five artists associated with The Drawing Studio have teamed to provide a visual journey of how art happens, from scheduling time in the studio to developing an idea from a sketch to the finished piece. "Art Parts" also includes the development of all the "parts" necessary to accompany art into the public eye, such as artist’s statements, websites, blogs, how artists talk about their art and more. The art in this show covers a representational cross-section of artistic approaches, work styles, and a variety of studio spaces.

Whether you are an artist, student, collector, or art enthusiast, this show will give you a chance to see some wonderfully diverse art, and also give you a fascinating look behind the scenes of being an artist.
