Bridges: An Exchange Exhibition
featuring the work of sixteen artists from Tucson, Arizona, and the United Kingdom
January 28 – February 25, 2012
Reception: Saturday, February 4, 6–9 pm
(Central Tucson Gallery Association multiple gallery openings)
(also open for Second Saturday Downtown on February 11)
Aptly entitled Bridges II: An Artist Exchange Exhibition, this exhibit, which premiered at the J Gallery in Northampton, England, in August 2011, is the second exchange exhibition between artists from Tucson and Northampton. As befits the title of the exhibit, artists from both Tucson and Great Britain will be present at the opening reception on February 4. Kathleen Velo, who taught at Northampton University on a Fulbright Teaching Exchange grant, developed this second exhibit which is funded by the Fulbright Commission and the United States Embassy in London.
In this exhibit are images of landscape and culture that have been created between two international groups of artists who have maintained close personal and cultural ties for over seven years. Including photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, this exhibit is extraordinary in its diversity of media and its depth of exploration and breadth of expression. That this exhibit is the result of conversations and connections made among international artists over time merits it a home at The Drawing Studio. |

Exhibition News
The Drawing Studio has enjoyed recognition from the arts community, and recent successful shows have created a buzz around the exciting possibilities that lie in exhibitions. The TDS Exhibition program was created and has been administered by a steady stream of dedicated volunteers since 2001.
In addition to its yearly schedule in the TDS Gallery, TDS now has the opportunity to organize exhibitions in nontraditional spaces such as offices, restaurants, banks, and other businesses in the Tucson area. Some of these venues have approached us to ask if coordinating “traveling shows” would be a possibility. These exhibits could highlight work from a specific class, medium, or artist(s).
Currently the Exhibition Council is looking to form a committee of dedicated folks to take on this task. Working on this committee would be a wonderful opportunity for Associates and students to exhibit their art work and learn about exhibitions. These traveling exhibits would also directly serve the TDS mission of engaging the general public in a conversation about visual learning.
Exhibition is a direct communication between artist and audience. Thus, exhibiting one’s work completes the cycle of creativity. Here at the Drawing Studio, exhibition can provide opportunities for those who have mastered their craft as well as those who are learning a new medium. It can also illustrate the journey of those pursuing an idea or mastery of a medium.
Alternately, exhibitions serve as a face for the organization. Some visitors or supporters may never take a class, but in the gallery they can see the outcomes of coursework and study as well as the ideas and work that stem from practice.
The Exhibition Council meets once a month, to plan upcoming exhibitions, schedule events, and review proposals for new exhibitions. Members also work to support the various upcoming exhibitions as needs arise. If you are interested in participating in either the Council or the traveling exhibit committee, you are welcome to attend. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering for specific events or exhibitions, contact Maria Arvayo, the TDS Exhibition Coordinator at exhibits@thedrawingstudio.org
The Exhibition Council meets the 4th Tuesday of every month at 4pm at TDS.
