the publication of

The Nature of Drawing

A Conversation About Art and Community
by Andrew Rush, TDS Founder
and Educational Director

Andrew Rush, "The Nature of Drawing"

“In our time, most of us don’t have a personal visual world. Our ability to see the world for ourselves has been co-opted by the bombardment of images raining down on us from the global electronic media juggernaut. By the time we leave our house in the morning the print media, the Internet and TV have already dumped into our brain hundreds of images, well designed to possess our visual space, mostly by a saturation process.

The purpose of this book is to introduce anyone with an interest in visual languages to the role that the practice of drawing can offer, both as an antidote that can reconnect us with the beauty of the visual world around us, and as a curriculum for learning how to participate in this vast domain of visual literacy that is a new and essential life skill in the twenty-first century.”
