Editor’s Corner

Summer is often a time that many look forward to with a tinge of the excitement they felt as children, when a bounty of unfettered days spread before them.

As Tucson artists, summer signals a series of visual changes that are likely to impact the way we approach our materials – whether we work from life or not. There is a daylight so bright it vaporizes the landscape and the long dusk with its hourly variations on hue and value. When the monsoon’s onset causes the scrim of dust to finally lift, new mountain vistas and rock outcroppings may appear, magnified and within arm’s reach.

Many of us also seek out new terrains in summer. We go to the sea or to mountain lakes. We take off across oceans. These new places too provide opportunities to startle and re-awaken our perceptions. While summer is often a time of conviviality, it also often permits us the peace to revisit who we think we are and put our interior lives into new perspective. We even say: a change in scenery will do us good.

For our upcoming issues and/or website, we welcome your reflections on and visual interpretations of the experience of summer – and perhaps the different places you have been – and how this experience has shaped your own efforts to make art and, through art, to discover the world anew. In this regard, we hope you are inspired to share your thoughts and experiences, as expressed in your art and writing.
