Outreach Art Tutoring for Seniors (OATS)

OATS places practicing artists in community settings (senior and neighborhood centers, libraries, assisted living facilities, small group homes, and the like) to work with seniors who can’t come to our classes at our downtown studio.

An important part of our program is exhibition as an integral part of the learning process. We feature seniors’ work in some of The Drawing Studio’s on-site gallery exhibitions as well as at various community venues.

For information about OATS, contact Pat Dolan, OATS Coordinator, seniors@thedrawingstudio.org.

Classes meet 8 consecutive weeks for 1-1/2 hours. All art supplies are provided.

Please register directly with the library offering each class.

OATS* Out and About Town

Thanks to our wonderful tutors, the Pima County Library has invited OATS to provide drawing classes for seniors at 15 libraries throughout the city. We have expanded our offerings to include drawing with color as well as drawing from observation. We also offer classes at Armory park, El Rio and Picture Rocks Community Centers and K.A.R.E. (a support program for grandparents raising grandchildren). Our programs at retirement communities include Atria Campana del Rio and La Canada Health Care Center.

I am always looking to add new sites as I feel strongly about the value of opening up to one’s creativity at any age. We have noticed the following positive changes in seniors:

  • Better health. Studies show that older people with hobbies and interests have stronger immune systems and are more able to cope with stress.
  • Better morale. Creative efforts can make one more emotionally resilient, and better able to cope with change and loss, as well as feel more positive about life in general.
  • Better relationships. Creative activities enrich relationships with family and friends, and help one make new friends.
  • Better future. Our seniors are active and involved which makes them a good role model for younger people.
