Winter-Spring 2011 Youth, Teen and Family Offerings

Note: Older teens (16+) are welcome to enroll in our adult classes. (Students under 18 must have written permission from parent/guardian to enroll in figure classes.) Younger teens (13–15) may enroll with permission of the instructor.

New! Bookmaking, comic illustration and drawing extravaganza workshop during Rodeo Break: Thursday and Friday, February 24 and 25. Fun for the entire family!
For ages 6–18, and parent/guardian (optional); children under 8 must be accompanied by enrolled parent/guardian. Supplies listed by each course.

Hanging Postcard Book
Taught by Alice Vinson
Thursday, 9 am–noon
Feb. 24

Join us in making a fun and portable book that you can carry wherever you go. Turn each page into a postcard about something you saw or did that day. Once you’ve completed your book, simply open it up fully, and it becomes a hanging book for you to display on your wall. All materials are provided, so all that you need to bring is your imagination!

Observing the Natural Desert World in Black, White, and Color
Taught by Tanya Rich
Friday, 9 am–noon
Feb. 25

Draw from natural western vegetation and creatures, using charcoal and pastel. Practice looking at and drawing the effects of dramatic light on spiny and poky cacti and critters! Bring your sketchbook (11˝×14˝ preferred). All other materials provided.

Comic Illustration/Narrative Stories
Taught by Joe Marshall
Thursday and Friday, 1–3 pm
Feb. 24 and 25

Storytelling in a comic narrative is a popular, and age old format, dating back to Egyptian times. Explore aspects of creating a visual story by defining and drawing theme, timing, characters, and story flow. Pre-paneled pages to use as templates will be given to each student. All other materials supplied as well. Bring a sketchbook to work through ideas.

Art School Bound: Portfolio Preparation and Review for High School Students Preparing to Apply to Art School

For students preparing an admissions portfolio to college art schools, a private consultation with Youth/Teen Program Director, Betina Fink. Review of student’s portfolio, information on art school admission requirements, and advice and recommendations about what to include and strategies to improve the quality of the portfolio and fill in gaps.

Fee: $50 for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
